IAIDO

Iaido is a traditional Japanese martial art with origins in the 17th century. In essence it is the art of drawing a Japanese sword from its scabbard and end an opponent’s attack in the most efficient way.

The Japanese characters for iaido can be translated as “the way of harmonious being”.

Through the practice of kata, the iaidoka seeks to combine spirit, body and the sword in order to reach a simplicity of movement and peace of mind essential in the face of adversity. The purpose of the practice is to be ready for any situation remaining calm and alert then responding in a focused, simple and natural way. The ultimate aim of the practice is to be able to control the opponent without drawing the sword and resolve any conflict calmly, using strength of spirit: Saya no uchi - where victory is obtained while the sword remains in the scabbard.

The Japanese sword is at the centre of iaido practice, it is used to encourage the student through practice and study, including self analysis to focus on building a positive character and demeanour for life. The student will practice initially with a bokutou/bokken (wooden sword), then as they progress, an iaito (training sword) is used.
